With the exception of the karate teacher, this is eerily similar to my own experience. We played "The Haunting" from the Call of Cthulhu book when I was about fifteen or sixteen, and I was hooked immediately. My mother had a stash of cheap 70's horror paperbacks which had been hanging around for years, and something about the name "Lovecraft" seemed familiar, so I had a look, and sure enough found a slim volume called The Tomb and Other Stories, as I recall. The first story I read in that was "The Outsider", then I read the rest of it, then went to Sussex Stationers and bought one of those big thick omnibuses, and all the others followed shortly after. I've still never read "The Horror in the Museum" though.
